The Fremont Family YMCA and Nye Wellness Center provide fitness programs for older residents.

The YMCA, located at 810 N. Lincoln Ave., offers programs that build a healthy mind, body and spirit, which include group fitness classes, water exercise classes and social functions. Call 721-6952 for more information.

The Nye Wellness Center provides programs to promote its members’ well-being and enhance their quality of life. The staff provides opportunities to enrich the mind, body and spirit while improving physical strength and flexibility in a comfortable, social atmosphere. During the past year, the name of Fremont’s Senior-Adult Center changed to Fremont Friendship Center. Its director is Laurie Harms.

The Friendship Center provides educational, recreational and social activities for adults 50-plus. Lunches are served Monday-Friday at 11:30 a.m. for a suggested contribution of $2.50. Van transportation is available for

50 cents each way. Meal and van reservations are required by noon the previous business day. Other amenities include a monthly health maintenance clinic, travel and one-day trips, computer classes and lab, a pool room, media center and fitness area. The center hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

Nye Rehabilitation provides a team therapy approach of care in a variety of settings - outpatient, assisted living, or long-term care. Licensed therapists provide physical, occupational and speech therapy, along with education and prevention techniques, in fully-equipped facilities to ensure quality care.   • Meals on Wheels: hot noon meals are delivered to homes Monday through Friday for $2.50. Call Deanna Freitag, 721-4444; e-mail: djfreitag@msn.com, or Sandy Camp, 721-5089.
  • Lifeline: Fremont Area Medical Center and its volunteers coordinate this service which allows clients to rent a telephone attachment and, in an emergency, push a button that alerts the communications center at FAMC. The Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging (ENOA) provides services for healthy and homebound senior citizens.

The local office is at the Fremont Friendship Center at Christensen Field, 1730 W. 16th St. Call Jeff Harmon at 721-7770 for information and assistance. Programs offered include:

  • Meals — hot, nutritionally balanced meals at 11:30 a.m. on weekdays. Transportation is available to and from the center. Suggested contribution is $2.50; reservations should be made 24 hours in advance by calling 727-2815.
  • Case Management — to evaluate living situations of frail older adults and locate support services to help them live independently as long as possible in their own homes. Call 721-7770.
  • Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) — Volunteers 55 and older are placed in non-profit organizations and agencies throughout Dodge and Washington Counties. Call Deb Marquardt at 721-7780.
  • Car-Go — a free transportation service for persons 55 and older for: medical appointments and pharmacies, grocery shopping, banking and other personal business, and beauty and barber shops. Call Deb Marquardt at 721-7780.
  • Dodge County Rural Transportation Program — transportation for elderly, persons with disabilities and general public to: medical and business appointments, shopping and airport. Vans are handicapped accessible. Cost based on distance traveled. Call 721-7770.
  • Volunteers Intervening for Equity (VIE) — trained volunteers help with issues pertaining to Medicare, Medicaid, insurance, legal or other matters. Call 721-7770 or 444-6617.
  • Senior Companion Program — volunteers 60 and older visit homes of frail older adults to give support and companionship. Call Mary Parker at 444-6558.
  • Foster Grandparent Program — volunteers 60 and older are matched with special needs children in schools, hospitals and other sites. Call Mary Parker at 444-6558.

Nye Square/Nye Courte Retirement Community continues to help meet housing needs of retired residents.

The retirement community, located at 655 W. 23rd St., offers tenants an independent apartment lifestyle at Nye Square and assisted living at neighboring Nye Courte. There are just under 200 apartments in all, in addition to dining, social and wellness programs.
