Today’s edition of USA Today contains some local flavor — literally.
Delicious! Bakery and Cafe in Valley will have a pair of its recipes featured in the national newspaper.
Trudy Fennell, owner/chef at the business, said the article features a top 10 list of restaurants and bakeries from around the country that are “sweet on bees” and use honey in their recipes.
Fennell said she favors honey over refined sugar in her goods for various reasons.
“I like the flavor and I like the naturalness of it,” she said. “It keeps your doughs very moist.”
Fennell said on Thursday that the article was going to feature the bakery/cafe’s recipes for its honey caramel and a dough that can be used to create cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls and sticky buns.
With so many bakeries across the country, Fennell was honored that recipes from Delicious! were chosen.
“I think it’s very special, especially from a tiny town like this,” Fennell said.
Fennell said she met a representative from the National Honey Board at a lecture in Omaha. She shared some samples of her baked goods with the representative.
Fennell then got an e-mail from the honey board saying they had been contacted by USA Today for the article and were looking for suggestions on businesses.
A representative from the honey board immediately gave the newspaper the name of the Valley bakery/cafe.
“She said my name came right to mind,” Fennell said.
Delicious!, which has been in Valley for more than two years, seats 38 and is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, although Fennell said it’s possible that another day will be added in the future because of customer response.
Fennell already has served people from such places as Kearney, Norfolk and Des Moines, Iowa.
“I guess people will come a long way for a good cinnamon roll or sticky bun,” she said.
But pastries aren’t the only things to dine on at Delicious!
There are homemade quiches and pancakes at breakfast time. At lunch, Delicious! serves up such fare as homemade soups, salads and a variety of sandwiches.
The soups are so popular, Fennell said, that many people will eat them for breakfast or buy them by the quart to take home. She said there are customers who request a phone call when a certain soup becomes available.
“We’re really blessed,” Fennell said. “We’ve got some wonderful customers. They’re like family.”
And Delicious! is a family business. Fennell said her sister, brother and even a granddaughter work at the bakery/cafe.
“We’re a real family operation and we work very hard to have just plain, good food for our customers,” Fennell said.
